TRIUMPHANT! FOUR WARSHIPS NAMED HMS TRIUMPH

No fewer than ten Royal Navy have ships been named HMS Triumph at one time or another, and this feature focuses on the four most recent, starting with the Swiftsure class battleship launched in the early years of the 19th century. Of the other ships to have carried the name, the first was a 68-gun galleon built in 1561, rebuilt in 1596, and sold in 1618.

The second was launched in 1623 and broken up in 1687. The 1698-built HMS was a 90-gun second-rate ship of the line. She was renamed HMS Prince in 1714, rebuilt in 1750 and broken up in 1773. Another HMS, an 18-gun sloop, came along in 1739, and the next was built in 1764 as a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line. She was used for harbour service from 1813 and was broken up in 1850.
