THERE IS A LOT OF HYPE around Radio Frequency (RF) in the beauty sector. As the technology continues to advance there are an increasing number of cost-effective solutions available. According to the CEO of Current Body (currentbody.com), Laurence Newman, who is a leader in RF technology, the global at-home beauty device market is already worth a staggering $14bn and is predicted to grow by 26 per cent by 2030*.
But just how new is radio frequency and how does it work? ‘In healthcare, RF has been utilised for medical procedures like diathermy since the early 20th century, while the beauty industry embraced it around the early 2000s,’ says Laura Kay, founder of Laura Kay London and beauty expert (laurakaylondon.com).
‘RF works by delivering electromagnetic energy to the derma layerspromoting tissue tightening. The heat generated by RF triggers the body’s natural healing response, resulting in improved skin texture, plumpness and firmness. Different wavelengths of RF are used to target specific skin depths and concerns. For example, bipolar RF primarily focuses on the skin’s surface, while monopolar RF penetrates deeper into the dermis. Understanding the different wavelengths is essential to tailor a treatment effectively based on the client’s individual skin needs and concerns,’ adds Laura.
