There was never one type of rescuer of Jews in the Holocaust. Between 1933 and 1945, tens of thousands of non-Jews from diverse backgrounds engaged in subversive acts to protect Jews. Some sought to protect relatives or friends. In Nazi-occupied Jersey, islander Dorothea Weber hid her Jewish friend Hedwig Bercu in her home for 18 months. Other rescuers came to the aid of neighbours or business associates, the most famous case being the secret annexe set up to hide the Frank family in the Netherlands.
Religious or humanitarian beliefs also spurred some groups and individuals to support Jews whom
