A tale of three bridges: two come down, but one stays put

HIGHLIGHTING the multi-faceted dilemmasfaced by conservationists who aim to save historic railway bridges, September saw two condemned while one was saved thanks to a local authority grant.

The Isle of Wight has decided to remove Bridge 12, built in 1875 by contractors constructing the Ryde & Newport Railway, because of its worsening condition and the fact that it is not needed.

The overbridge, which stands 700 yards to the west of Haven street station, was the only means of crossing the line until the extension to Smallbrook opened.
