Every magazine editor in the world has read Tina Brown’s (mainly because every magazine editor in the world harbours a dream of running . It was as I was was like. “As we purred down the Hudson River in Malcolm’s pale mahogany floating crib, billions of dollars stroked each other' s egos over lobster and champagne,” reads one entry, dropping names as she goes - Rupert, Mick, Jerry. I can’t imagine a more exciting city in a more exciting decade than New York in the 80s - Wall Street, strings of battered yellow taxis and steam inexplicably rising from manholes. at the centre of all this was a yacht, designed by jon Bannenberg (who else?). To receive an invitation to a party on was to know you had arrived. All the greats got one: Elizabeth Taylor, Paul McCartney, Andy Warhol… CEOs and megastars clambered on board, gossiped and occasionally slunk off to one of the yacht’s cleverly discreet seating areas. We’ve resurfaced this seductive slice of history with Daniel Pembrey’s excellent account of life on board the yacht on page 270. I’m not sure my would make quite such interesting reading, but here’s hoping I pick up a few choice anecdotes as show season strikes.
