he Arcadian general Philopoemen (c.252-182 BC) deserves to be better known. Admired by Polybius (who wrote a biography of and long spears. With these troops, he defeated the Lacedaemonians at Mantinea in 207 BC. This last gasp of Greek greatness before it was defeated by the Roman legions is a period which should be better known and appreciated. Errington's scholarly biography (published in 1969) is a great place to start and remains the only real treatment of Philopoemen in English.
