Often, I will explain to my guitar-building students that when their work is scrutinised by an experienced luthier, it is not likely to be the sound of the instrument that provides the first measure of the craftsmanship. Nor is it the playability of the fingerboard. Or the carve of the neck. A fancy inlay here or there may distract the casual viewer, but not the eye
