Most anglers are aware that twice a month, every month, the coastline experiences a sequence of larger than usual tides. These are known as spring tides. They occur around the periods which coincide with both the new and full moon when the sun and the moon are aligned and when the gravitational pull on the earth’s atmosphere is at its greatest. During spring tides the sea level rises higher than normal, and also retreats much further down the beach. As we will see, these monthly occurrences offer opportunities to both shore and boat anglers.
