When London’s took this photo of Inia Te Wiata in the basement carparkhence the goatee. Fifteen months later, Te Wiata (Ngāti Raukawa) would be dead of pancreatic cancer, at the age of 56. The carving was completed after its unfinished section was shipped home and worked on by his two sons under the supervision of Waikato master carver Piri Poutapu. The completed work was erected in NZ House in 1972. There, it still stands.
