TO READ THE STORY
This month’s story, ‘Three Days’ by Samantha Hunt, really puts the reader through the wringer emotionally. As always, you will get the most out of this masterclass if you read the story for yourself (https://writ.rs/threedays), however I should warn you that there are some difficult themes and upsetting scenes in it. It is a true masterclass in the art of building up a sense of tension and foreboding, and then delivering on the promise at the end.
As you read the story there are a number of moments when a strong feeling of apprehension is triggered. Let’s have a look at some of those moments. Right from the start we have our main character, Beatrice, walking along a road. Notice how we immediately get a sense of jeopardy from the fact that she is walking along the highway with only the guardrail between her and the traffic.
