They’re noisy, bad for the environment because of the fuel they burn and emissions they give off and they have enormous safety risks, and need frequent servicing, yet generators remain one of the most widely used options to provide South Africans with an uninterrupted power supply.

Like many countries beset by a lack of electricity, the whirring sounds of fuel-guzzling generators during blackouts have become commonplace. In places such as Cape Town, generators used on ships in the harbour can be heard throughout the city when the lights go out.
