The government’s plan to ease environmental laws to boost housebuilding has put the housing crisis and the climate crisis on a collision course and has even seen the RSPB backtrack after branding the government “liars”.
Housing Secretary Michael Gove and Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey announced on Tuesday 29 August that nutrient neutrality regulations, which prevent rivers from being polluted, would be watered down with the government investing £280 million in mitigating the effects instead.
The government said the law, which was introduced by the EU in 2017, was “defective” and insisted removing the “red tape” would unlock the ability to build 100,000 homes. It is planning to amend the Levelling Up and Regeneration
