90 Years of women in The Weekly

Rebecca Gibney

When Rebecca Gibney first appeared on the cover of The Weekly in 1990, she was a well-established star. The Kiwi-born actress had made the shift to Australia in 1984, later stealing the show on popular series The Flying Doctors. She was young, beautiful and talented but, she told The Weekly 30 years later, inside she felt none of those things. “I went through a lot of self-doubt in my 20s and early 30s,” she said. “It’s true that youth is wasted on the young because with wisdom and hindsight, you go, ‘If only I had believed in myself’.” Luckily, plenty of others did.

Rebecca has not only won fans and awards as a lead actress, she co-created crime caper Wanted, and served as executive producer on hits including Halifax: Retribution and TV series Under The Vines. Most importantly, she has mentored the young actors on every project she has a hand in. Packed to the Rafters co-stars Hugh Sheridan and Jessica Marais, Geraldine Hakewill and more have thanked Rebecca for playing a role in their development. “Oh look, I can be grumpy and I can do the wrong thing, but every day I try to do the best I can,” Rebecca told The Weekly of her winning approach to life. “I probably make people sick because I am the born optimist. I do believe things will always get better.”
