As this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show demonstrated, rock gardens have come a long way from neat 1970s rockeries filled with polite and pretty flowers. Today’s designs can feature natural boulders or concrete reclaimed from car parks, repurposed paving slabs, grit and gravel, with tough evergreen grasses, small alpine plants and perennials slotting beautifully into the crevices.
