From the time she was just 11 years old, Sara Mulvey has been an important part of famous yarn shop Black Sheep Wools. Her mum, Carol Mulvey, opened the shop in 1983 in a small retail space above a supermarket in Culcheth, stocking old-school yarns like Lister and Sunbeam. Could either Sara or her mother have predicted that, 40 years later, their tiny shop would not only still be in business but also have grown to become what might be the largest knitting and stitching shop in the UK?
Many UK hooksters will be familiar with The Craft Barn, Black Sheep Wools’ massive bricks-and-morter shop, a favourite online destination for all things yarn-related. But few know the long history behind the shop – or about the family who has dedicated their lives to it.
