Oregon, Washington and Idaho have the most restrictive regulations for muzzleloader hunting in the nation. Blackpowder hunters are limited to loose powders, primitive projectiles, open sights and ignition systems open to the elements. Even with these regulations, there are many rifle choices in both traditional and modern styles.

The theme of the regulations for each state is very similar, though slight differences are found in the language used to describe legal projectiles and ignition systems.
