But even after decades of honing those muscles, developing her flexibility and building the courage to attempt more and more difficult steps, she can still be surprised by the result. ‘Sometimes I think I’m going to paint a completely different picture from what happens,’ she says. ‘But because the image in my mind isn’t concrete, they all go on their own journey.’

Art has been a constant of Lauren’s own journey. She recalls how her dadstack of art supplies, and perhaps a little kernel of confidence that she subconsciously stored away to draw on later in life.
