IN PERSPECTIVE

Auction in the Rockies

THE ANNUAL Jackson Hole Art Auction in Jackson Hole, Wy., will take place Sept. 16. Featuring works by both contemporary and 19th and 20th century artists, the auction will offer a wide range of paintings of the American West, landscapes, figurative works, Native American subjects, and North American and African wildlife.

Notable wildlife works include Stairway to the Stars (est. $100,000-150,000) by Bob Kuhn. Kuhn, who died in 2007, was a celebrated realist painter who got his start illustrating for outdoor magazines in the 1940s and shifted to painting for galleries in the 1970s. In this work, a group of bighorn sheep are standing on a snowy mountain against a cold winter sky.

Another wildlife piece, Lookout Tower—Timber wolves (est. $60,000-90,000) by painter and naturalist Carl Brenders, shows a small pack of wolves standing atop a rocky outcropping in a mountain forest. Extremely detailed, this painting is an excellent showcase of the Belgian-born Brenders’ skill in crafting lifelike images of the animals he studies. Additional wildlife artists whose work will be up for auction include the German-born Carl Rungius, who painted in the first half of the 20th century, and internationally collected realist painter Bruce Lawes.

For those looking for Western artworks, several pieces by Howard Terpning and John Clymer will be available. Terpning’s 1982 work Status Symbols (est. $200,000-500,000) is a portrait of a Plains Indian warrior holding a lance and round shield. Clymer’s Last of the Buffalo ($175,000-275,000) depicts a winter hunting scene, with a pair of hunters aiming to shoot at a herd of running buffalo. At their feet lie two buffalo already killed.

Several pieces by renowned Wyoming landscape painter Conrad Schwiering will also be available for the first time. One piece, titled Cuttin’ ‘Em In shows a ranch hand on horseback bringing in a mother cow and her calf against a backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. The horseman’s bright yellow coat makes for a striking central focal point, while also creating a visual coherence with the yellow of the mountain scrub and trees in the lower half of the canvas. Additional Western artists included in this auction are Edgar Alwyn Payne, John Hauser, Gary Carter, Olaf Wieghorst, and Robert Pummill.

Bidders will also be able to acquire brand new works by artists who submitted them specifically for this auction.

Asheville Auction

BRUNK AUCTIONS in Asheville, N.C. will host its Premier & Emporium Auctions September 14-16. Items include works by American and French painters, pottery, furniture, stoneware, and more.

Among the works by American painters is the oil painting On the Welsh Coast by Thomas Moran, a painter of the Hudson River School. Featuring the sublime, blossoming skies this school is known for, the painting depicts a rocky coastal scene with a woman walking toward the viewer. Other American painters represented include Jasper Cropsey, Martha Walters, Hermann Herzog, and Wolf Kahn.

Furniture offerings include a beautiful Baltimore Federal inlaid mahogany demilune card table. This piece, which comes with documentation from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, features an acorn and bellflower inlay.

Two stoneware vessels by Dave Drake are also up for auction, both signed and dated May 29, 1857. These present a unique offering, as Drake pieces that are signed and dated on the same day are very rare.

Four lots of Chinese Export Armorial Manigault Porcelain will be offered, including a highly desirable 19th century set made for the American market.
