SILVER COINAGE DURING THE WARS OF THE ROSES

The years during which the 14 battles of the Wars of the Roses bloodied English soil encompassed the reigns of only four crowned kings, but accounts of their silver coinage are not completely straightforward, as we reveal in this in-depth guide.

The history of silver coinage during the Wars of the Roses (1455–87) is complex because two of the four monarchs each wore the crown of England twice. But since none of the kings of the Wars of the Roses struck prolific varieties of silver money, we can touch lightly on all of their groats, halfgroats, pennies, halfpennies and farthings in the compass of this article; but first let me summarise the war in the space of two paragraphs.
