PICK ’N’ MIX

How possible is it to mix and match drivetrain components?

Sammy, Devon

When it comes to mechanical (cable-operated) drivetrains, it’s possible to mix and match within brands’ own ‘ecosystems’. A 12-speed Shimano mech will work with any 12-speed Shimano shifter, for example, and any of SRAM’s 12-speed parts should work with each other. You’ll come into problems if you try to mix 11- and 12-speed kit together, so as a general rule, keep the number of gears consistent.

Staying with mechanical drivetrains, make sure to use a mech and shifter from the same brand, because the amount of cable the shifter pulls through isn’t always the same. However, we’ve ‘cross-branded’ chains, cassettes and chainrings with few issues. While ultimate shifting performance might be better if you stick with parts from one manufacturer, mixing and matching can certainly save you money.

Calm Before The Storm
My head is spinning. I’m trying to sort out a day to meet up with Brendan Fairclough to shoot an MBUK front cover and chat about the follow-up to his wildly successful 2017 film Deathgrip (unsurprisingly entitled Deathgrip 2), and I’m getting vertigo
