Irish land records can serve as a good substitute for the 19th-century censuses that were destroyed by fire in 1922. From 1847 to 1865, the Primary Valuation of Ireland took place. In these records, commonly known as Griffith’s Valuation, land was surveyed and valued for the purpose of levying a property tax to help fund poor relief.
