AFFECTIONATE, INTELLIGENT, playful: these aren’t characteristics typically associated with donkeys, but Susie Corlett, owner of Rocky Hill Miniature Donkey Stud in Dungog, New South Wales, says the equine animals are just misunderstood. “Sometimes you go into the paddock and they throw themselves at your feet and demand to be cuddled,” she says, laughing.

It’s an irresistible invitation, Susie adds, noting that miniature donkeys are “like your childhood teddy bears come to life” with their oversized ears, fluffy coats and dainty features.
