ROCK gardens were hugely popular in Victorian times as a way to display plants that had been brought back to the UK by plant hunters. Today, we associate alpine or rock plants (not all come from the Alps) with the displays at large botanic or public gardens, where the plants are displayed among rocks on a grand scale covering a large, usually sloping, site.
