TOM’S OLD GUY

Guy Invincible DLU745C’s second life on the fairground of the West of England (News, August 2023 issue) came when it was purchased, along with similar Guy Invincible DLU742C, by ‘Thomas Whitelegg & Sons Amusement Caterers’ of Plymouth and Exeter. They bought it in 1969, to replace two of their three ageing ex-RAF Thornycroft Amazon 6x4 towing/generator trucks for the 1970 touring season.

DLU745C replaced Thornycroft Amazon ‘Gladiator’ HFJ 757 and was used for transporting and generating Whitelegg’s No1 Dodgem track, where it remained until the end of 1975. It was then sold, with the Dodgem Track, to Tommy Rowland of ‘Thomas Rowland Amusements’ in St. Austell Cornwall. This was not the same business as the better-known ‘Anderton & Rowland’ which is operated by Tommy’s wife’s family the DeVey’s.
