Thank you for Danyl McLauchlan’s genuinely depressing article on our tax system (“Missing pieces”, August 19). As someone proud to pay tax, I do not understand the lack of support for a fairer system that would benefit most New Zealanders and certainly the least privileged.
Polls and surveys are fine but I wonder if some deeper probing into the psyche of those opposed to taxes would be useful. Why does Sir John Key, a man who evidently has so much, feel a need to publicly advocate against research that suggests he should perhaps pay a little more?
Perhaps a clearer view of the human response to fairer taxation could help us communicate better and advance real change.
