Towards the end of this book, there’s a mention of a Tyrrell employee called John Lucas, who had worked for team founder Ken Tyrrell for decades as a truck-driver and who was badly injured while crossing a road. As another employee recalls: ‘John… lost the use of his arm, so he could never work again. Ken arranged for him to live in a bungalow on the site… Ken looked after John and always saw that he was all right.’
This recollection sums up the family atmosphere that prevailed at Tyrrell from its inception in Formula Junior in 1960 to its sad demise in 1998, when it was taken over by British American Racing. The unfortunate John Lucas had, in fact, been a part of Ken Tyrrell’s ‘family’
