IT’S A COLLECTOR’S WORLD

The greatest thing about model cars is it doesn’t matter whether you want to drop a few bucks or a few hundred bucks, there is always something for everyone. Until now, NZPC has been showcasing the ‘plastic fantastic’ side of the hobby, but this time around, I wanted to give you a peek behind the ‘die-cast’ model curtain. Die-cast? Yup, and if you aren’t familiar with this term, weirdly enough it is highly likely that you already have a die-cast model car or two in your home right now! Not even kidding! Luckily, I didn’t need to look far, as our very own NZPC contributor Richard Opie happens to have ‘one or two’ of these things in his spare room. So, with a cuppa brewed and in his spare room chocka with all glorious things die-cast, he gave me a wee insight into his collection!

Aaron: Gidday, Richie, thanks for sitting down with me. So, what exactly is a ‘die-cast’ model?

By definition ‘die-cast’ is the process of how the model is made using metal. They are still very much a favoured medium with collectors, and the metal used in construction or casting is usually a zinc alloy base.
