A POINT TO PROVE

Less than 24 hours before our interview, Matt Fitzpatrick was battling his way around a biblically wet Royal Liverpool in the final round of the 151st Open Championship. The week was memorable for the Fitzpatrick family but it was younger brother Alex, making his Open debut, who was all smiles at the end after an outstanding share of 17th place.

Matt ended the week in a tie for 41st. In his pre-Championship press conference he commented that a top-30 finish would be a good result. His Sunday evening was then spent driving across to Sheffield for a Skechers sponsor’s day at his home club, Hallamshire.

You might forgive him for at least a bit of tiredness and the odd stifled yawn, but for five hours he went above and beyond everything that was asked of him.
