Fordson New Performance Super Major

Q I’ve always liked the late Fordson New Performance Super Majors, with their grey wings and wheels, and after a long time seeking one out, I finally have my own. The tractor has been nicely restored and doesn’t need anything done to it, other than preserving it.

At first opportunity I took it for a run along the road and was disappointed to find it to be rather slow, even with the engine opened up fully. I’ve seen other Majors romping along the road faster than mine and wonder why this should be so.

Is there anything wrong with my gearbox? It changes gear nicely and isn’t unduly noisy. Any explanation would be most welcome.
