Spring and September are two words to gladden the hearts of gardeners. Words that invoke not only the busyness we are about to be thrust into, but also the new life about to burst into being – without our intervention. In the rush to germinate seeds, prepare soil and plant out it is easy to miss the small miracles happening daily as buds swell, shoots shoot and bare wood becomes sheathed in green.

All sown up Seeds of vegetables that struggle with the cold are best started indoors this month and planted out once the air and soil temperatures warm up in October and early November.
