ASK anyone around here where to find him and they’ll tell you to look out for a bearded guy with buckets of asphalt hard at work on a road somewhere in the area.

Because this is where you’ll usually find Piet Lottering, the local hero of Randfontein on the Gauteng West Rand – on a road, head down, compactor at the ready, filling in the potholes that pock the tar and have become a menace to many a motorist.

Oom Piet, as he’s known in these parts, started his pothole-repair project in February and has already plugged some 5 000 holes in the town, by his estimate.
