It had been a little while since I made a journey by rail on a regular service train when I presented myself at York station early in July to do just that. My last train ride had been in March on a charter special in a squashy reserved seat, with silver service catering and no less a locomotive than in fine form on the front. Of course, such adventures are a world away from chancing your arm in the rough and tumble uncertainty of public timetable offerings – and that, I admit, is one of the reasons for seizing opportunities like that. However, sooner or later
