Classic Motorcycle Mechanics

Bay- watch

1985 Suzuki GSX-R750F

Asking: £1150

Advertised as a 1984 bike, and it could have been built in 1984, but they weren’t launched until early 1985 and this does appear to be a genuine early F model – that means flimsy, lightweight wheels, twitchy handling (the 1986 version got a 25mm longer swingarm for more stability) and flat slide Mikuni VM29SS carbs (later models had more user-friendly CV carbs). It’s even got the correct two-piece seat (changed to one-piece for 1986). That’s all in its favour, because the first models of iconic bikes are always more sought after than subsequent versions, but it also means model-specific parts are harder to find, and this is missing quite a few, exhaust and fairing panels (the top-fairing is aftermarket fibreglass) being the most obvious.
