After the Sarum Finescale Club completed work on a P4 challenge layout some years ago, it was considering new projects to focus group efforts. The membership contains both P4 and EM modellers, though EM was preferred as more stock was readily available.

Inspiration came with an offer of an EM gauge layout by one of our members. The layout was largely completed to a stage where all track was in place to a very high standard and the majority ballasted, some elements of the scenery were underway, but no buildings were available.

As conceived, the builder had planned an industrial diesel-era layout, set in West Country, with aindustrial premises, served by private sidings, reflecting china clay and other Cornish activities.
