Strip planting and harvesting of sugar cane virtually eliminated soil, moisture and fertility loss on hillsides on Theo Wise's farm Umhlali in KwaZulu-Natal.

Strip croppimg also played a large part in raising the farm's mean peak by 125% since he bought it in 1957. He disagrees with those who say that no conservation practices are needed in the sugar belt
