Coalitions: accept reality of smaller parties

THERE has been a mixed reaction from smaller political parties regarding the newly announced proposals on coalition governments.

The proposals formed part of a two-day National Dialogue on coalition governments, hosted by Paul Mashatile, the deputy president, in Cape Town last Friday and Saturday.

The aim of the talks was to provide a framework for how coalition governments could be done more constructively; in a way that benefited the citizens of the country.

Some smaller parties are concerned with the proposals, particularly the need for parties to garner 1% of votes to gain a seat in council or parliament. They said this would be problematic as most of them have less than 1%
