More courage to experiment

Beat / It‘s been a turbulent time for you since the last album „Noire“ (2018), hasn‘t it?

Ronan / Yes, a lot has changed. In 2019 I found out that I had to leave my old studio because all tenants were given notice. At that time I was still on tour with „Noire“. A friend told me at dinner about a 600sqm floor and asked if I wanted to move in. I said yes and set out to build the studio I had always dreamed of. At the beginning of 2020, the walls of the new studio were just standing when Corona hit. The next two years were very painful because craftsmen and electricians were suddenly no longer able to keep appointments.

Beat / Were you still able to use the Corona period productively?

/ Yes. A lot of people just stopped working during Corona, but it was important to me to finish my studio. I wanted tokeep coming to me. In this respect, this time was a blessing, because I recorded countless demos on my mobile phone. I think it‘s fantastic that there are synths on the phone now - and I say that as someone who first played a synth in 1979. In the end I had 90 basic ideas. Everything was there from drafts to almost finished songs to orchestral arrangements. I didn‘t set myself any limits. In fact, I still have material for about three albums in the drawer now.
