OVER the past two decades director Ira Sachs has diligently cultivated a narrow but rich furrow as a kind of queer Manhattan Rohmer, thoughtfully charting the shifting compromise of love and money in makeshift modern families. With PASSAGES a wilder spirit seems to have taken hold of him.
On the face of it, this is one more spin on that hoary roundabout, the Parisian ménage-àtrois. Except this one focuses on a married gay couple: German film director Tomas (played with infernal energy and charm by Franz Rogowski) and English art studio manager Martin (Ben Whishaw casting off Paddington’s duffel coat with some febrile sex scenes).
