LOCAL hero Liam Davies took less than a round to pick off another respected name at the Telford International Centre and retain his British and European super-bantamweight titles.

Davies had previously shocked Marc Leach and Ionut Baluta at the same venue and, while he was favoured to beat Jason Cunningham, he wasn’t fancied to defeat him in this fashion.

The 27-year-old Davies promised a stoppage and it took him just 2-46 of the opening round to deliver it. Referee Victor Loughlin rescued the outgunned Cunningham when he was under fire on the ropes, having given him a count earlier in the round.

A pumped-up Davies was straight on the attack at the opening bell, throwing looping rights, as Cunningham circled, poking out southpaw jabs.
