I think most people would agree that the KTM 500 EXC-F is the king of the desert. Just last month David Walsh piloted a KTM 500 EXC-F to his fourth straight Finke Desert race win and since 2009, KTM have won 12 of 14 Finke titles, albeit with a mix of different capacities in there. But a 500cc four-stroke is the bike of choice now for all desert races and for good reason.

I remember chatting with Chief Tester Ben Grabham a while back about the difference between a 450cc four-stroke and a 500cc four-stroke in the desert and he said about 9km/h.
