Alongside the 61 incredible works from this year’s talented artists is an event program amplifying the voices – prompted by the recent purchase of a significant early painting by the Melbourne-based artist Helen Maudsley, celebrates the work of women artists held in the State Art Collection. The exhibition focuses on art made in the 1950s in Australia by Maudsley’s contemporaries. To Sept 17 – the works in this State Art Collection exhibition deal with aspects of contemporary life. brings together works that are fundamentally ambiguous in a way that matches the kinds of confusion and groundlessness that define our moment. In , 2021, an almost 8-metre-long animated skeleton lies confined within the edges of television screens, as they sing a haunting lullaby out towards a murky city skyline. To Dec 4 – a multisensory participatory exhibition inviting audiences of all ages and abilities to contribute to an installation of monumental figurative sculptures that morph and change in unexpected ways. The exhibition interrupts preconceived perceptions of disability and normativity creating space for slow-play, complex conversations, experimentation, and contemplation. From Aug 26 – this exhibition features a selection of paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics by the seven artists who formed the Antipodean group in Melbourne in 1959: Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, John Brack, Robert Dickerson, John Perceval, and Clifton Pugh. Drawn from the State Art Collection, the exhibition explores the formation and aspirations of the group, situating their work within the social and political context of late 1950s Australia.
