Hawaii’s Half Dollar

n 1928, Hawaii marked the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Capt. James Cook on the Hawaiian Islands. The story of the development of the special half dollar issued on that occasion was told by Robert E. Van Dyke in the October 1964 issue of magazine. “Ethelwyn Castle was a born leader of the ‘Honolulu 400’,” wrote Van Dyke. “She was a great art patron, an early organizer of the Symphony societies of this city, and everything that spelled grace, beauty, culture, the fine arts, evolved around her. “Individually she did more to promote the finer things in the city of Honolulu in that day and age than any one else.
