GIVE YOUR HMMWV A BRAKE
Early model HMMWVs often have problems with the parking bake cable being chafed or crushed by the lower control arm. While a new bracket has been developed, HMMWV owners should check their parking brake cables for damage or wear. The official military quickfix is to wrap the cables with rubber tape until the new style brackets can be installed.
HISSING HMMWV
Q: I have a 1997 HMMWV with CTIS. The front tires are always low after sitting for a day or so. I have sometimes noticed a faint hissing sound like air coming from around the front hubs. I don’t know much about the CTIS system and it seems like it might be a complicated job to repair or rebuild it.
: There’s a saying that the simplest answer to most questions is often the right answer. First off, if you don’t have service manuals for your HMMWV, you should get them. Many early model HMMWVs had problems with the front CTIS air line hoses being stretched during hard turns…when the front wheels were cranked all the way the left or right. A new fitting was developed to install at the swivels to take the strain off the hoses (American Motors General part number 4-4-140339S).
