THE PRO TOM MACKIE

CAMERA: NIKON D850

Originally from Iowa in the USA, Tom moved to the UK in 1985, and is now based in Norfolk. He started out with a Nikon F2 Photomic, and after progressing through film and digital cameras, such as the Nikon FM and FE2, he now uses a Nikon D850. Tom has amassed has a huge back catalogue of images which he sells through stock libraries, and undertakes commercial photography commissions as well as running photography workshops around the world.

THE APPRENTICE TOM BARRETT

Tom works as a graphic designer for the Broads Authority, which oversees the Broads National Park that spans Norfolk and Suffolk in eastern England. His love of photography was rekindled when he took on the Authority’s photo library, which consists mainly of old slides. Having owned film cameras in the past he’s since invested in a Nikon D810, and he’s looking for help with composition to help him create images worthy of adding to the library’s stock.

Tom Barrett met professional landscape and travel T photographer Tom Mackie near the village of Thurne in Norfolk, at the appointed time of 3:30… in the morning! “Landscape photography is all about being at your location before sunrise, and being there beyond sunset,” Tom M chirpily explained. “And at the height of summer that means getting up early and staying out late.” It was the middle of June and the summer equinox was fast approaching, where the days are at their longest and nights at their shortest.
