Purists might want to look away now. Alan Forster’s Montego is the sort of car which may get your blood pressure rising if you are precious about originality. For a start, it is not a ‘real’ MG. That’s not a snooty comment on the MG Montego in general but this particular car had been badged as an Austin when it left the factory. Secondly, it has a K-series engine and gearbox, from a later ZR, rather than the original O-series. Finally, it wears the racing livery of a 1990s Volvo.

This Montego has never been about winning concours cups or creating a replica of a rarity. It is about having fun and making people smile… not least its owner. If you are racking your brains trying to remember if there was an ‘official’ MG Montego Estate, we will help you out: there wasn’t… except for one car which was built for customer research purposes.
