Letter of the week

Potato birds

YOUR readers may be interested in a novel idea to keep birds from raiding vegetable or strawberry patches. Rather than erecting wildlife-hazardous green plastic netting, simply take a large potato, make a small hole through the middle to pull a securing cord through, insert some feathers as wings and a tail, then suspend it on twine over the crop to be protected. Any small breeze will make it move and spin, looking like a hawk to any passing birds. They will not venture near it, thereby protecting your precious vegetables and fruits. Simple, safe and 100% effective! Dave Archer, Dorset

The writer of the letter of the week will win a bottle of Pol Roger Brut Réserve Champagne
