Equipment investment not essential for newcomers

Q My friend and I are planning to take up polo, but we don't have a clue what tack and equipment we will need to buy. What does a beginner require?

Giles says: If you are attending an introductory lesson it will be necessary to bring along your own safety helmet if you have one, plus a whip. It will be acceptable to turn up in breeches or jeans, with white jeans being ideal. Generally, the club or training establishment will provide the mallet.
