THIS MONTH Alan Clarke’s Christine and Road
One of my favourite British directors is Stephen Frears, but boy, he’s a tough interview – grouchy and terse. Until, that is, on my fourth go-around, when I happened to mention Alan Clarke. ‘Clarkey!’ hollered Frears, beaming from ear to ear. There followed a 10-minute eulogy detailing the tremendous merits, and spirit, of the filmmaker who died in 1990.
