TfW tram-train testing begins on Welsh Valleys

TESTING of Transport for Wales (TfW) Class 398 tram-trains began on the Welsh Valleys between Taff’s Well and Radyr on June 16.

Two sets, Nos. 398008/009, were used initially, using both battery and overhead line electrification power. GB Railfreight is undertaking the initial testing.

Stadler is building 36 three-car Class 398s for the Core Valley Lines (CVL) element of the South Wales Metro project, with the first tram-trains due to enter traffic next year. TfW plans to deploy the ‘398s’ on services between Cardiff Queen Street and Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Treherbert and Cardiff Bay. They are planned to operate
