FOUR former East Midlands Railway (EMR) Class 180s have moved to Ely Papworth for storage.
The four five-car 125mph diesel multiple units (Nos. 180109/111-113) were handed back to Angel Trains following the end of the duties at the end of May, and had been stabled at Chaddesden Sidings (Derby).
On June 28, the first pair to move, Nos. 180110/111, left for Ely, but only reached Melton Mowbray where they were recessed overnight. The next day the pair formed the 5Q80 13.03 Melton Mowbray-Ely Papworth. They were followed by Nos. 180109/113 on June 30.
EMR withdrew the ‘180s’ from regular service on May 19, but three returned to traffic for a single day on May 29, to provide extra capacity on the Midland Main Line due to the League One play-off final at Wembley between Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday. No. 180110 worked the 1C17 07.33 Derby-St Pancras and 1F82 21.32 return, releasing ‘222s’ for strengthening, while Nos. 180109/111 both operated relief trains between Sheffield and St Pancras. Their EMR branding had already been removed.
